Odua Research Group is a not-for-profit organisation.
It derives its funding from contributions from private individuals and organisations with a shared interest in the emancipation of the Yoruba Nation.
Database Administrator (Staff L2)
ORIS-1 (Odua Research Information System) is conceived as the backbone and the first step to a full-fledged centralised national database ORIS (Oodua Republic Information Systems). This database which is hosted currently in Europe (and in the cloud) contains all the information and data on various aspects of the Yoruba Nation (as well as on Nigeria as these are relevant, or affect the Oodua Republic Project).
The Database Administrator will have the full control of this database.
As your main responsibilities, you will be expected to:
- Install and maintain the performance of database servers.
- Develop processes for optimizing database security.
- Set and maintain database standards.
- Manage database access.
- Performance tuning of database systems.
- Install, upgrade, and manage database applications.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot database errors.
- Recommend and implement emerging database technologies.
- Create and manage database reports, visualizations, and dashboards.
- Create automation for repeating database tasks.
- Be available for on-call support as needed.
Required skills
To be able to perform these tasks, we expect you to have:
- Strong command of SQL and SQL server tools
- Advanced knowledge of database security, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring standards
- Understanding of relational and dimensional data modeling
- PowerShell and Unix shell scripting skills
- Familiarity with SSAS, SSIS, SSRS
- Strong mathematical and statistical knowledge
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Impeccable attention to detail
Qualification and experience.
- Master’s degree in computer science or a related field
- One to three years of experience in database administration, information technology, database architecture, or a related field
- Professional certifications preferred
- Experience with Linux and Windows Server environments
- Extensive experience with database technologies (MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL Oracle, MongoDB)
- Experience with cloud services (AWS, Microsoft Azure) a plus
What we expect
As ORIS-1 holds important data some of which are of rather sensitive and confidential nature, the DBA function is that for which great care and skill are needed. In addition, considering that the database itself is hosted within the territories of the European Union, the DBA will be expected to avail himself or herself with full knowledge of all the compliance requirements of the GDPR.
We expect a fully functional and accessible information system serving as the basis for the ORIS.
Nature of the contract
This is a full-time job.
We would like to sign contracts with the successful applicants by February 2022 with starting date to be mutually agreed.
